’Tis the Season!

Winter in New England is beginning! With cooler temperatures and the first snow of the season, our hearts and minds turn to holidays and winter activities.

Anchored by Hanover and Lebanon, NH, and White River Junction, VT, the Upper Valley Region of New Hampshire and Vermont is an exceptional part of New England. Here are theatres and galleries representing local and regional artists and artisans, restaurants featuring cuisine from many parts of the world, retail stores ranging from unique boutiques to department stores as well as farms, wineries, breweries, and more. And for miles around, the region’s many small towns offer charms and adventures of their own.

Lyme, NH, just north of Hanover, is one of those towns, making the Lyme Inn a great home base for a visit to the Upper Valley. The Inn offers nine beautiful rooms with king, queen, and two double bed options and five suites with fireplaces and couches that convert to beds. For those looking for a home away from home, our cottage is a fully contained unit with a kitchen (including a dishwasher), dining area, two living spaces (one with a sleeper sofa), and a bedroom. And within the Inn resides Ariana’s Restaurant, one of the best dining establishments in our area.

The Inn is at one end of the Lyme town green, and around the green are two other eateries and an amazing country store. Latham House Tavern offers in-house dining, Stella’s Italian Kitchen provides prepared foods to eat in or take out, and the Lyme Country Store offers both prepared foods and grocery items.

For local recreation, there are two great skiing options. The Dartmouth Skiway, minutes from the Inn, is the home mountain for Dartmouth College’s alpine ski team. The Skiway has reasonably priced lift tickets, a ski school, a comfortable lodge, and a great family environment. Green Woodlands is a multi-generation family organization whose goal is to preserve a little piece of nature for many future generations. They provide free access to miles of groomed cross-country ski trails.

For a relaxing day, two spas are available for massages, facials, and other treatments.

Beyond Lyme, more adventures await: from cooking lessons and great shopping at King Arthur Bakery, Café, and Retail Store to exploring the science of music at the Montshire Museum of Science.

And with the holidays comes great entertainment. Northern Stage is presenting the Railway Children. “Faced with a family crisis during the Great Depression, three siblings are uprooted from their city lives to a small Vermont railway town. Bobbie, Peter, and Phyllis are transformed by their life in the country as they make thrilling discoveries exploring the railroad and befriending the people in their new town. Adapted from the beloved children’s novel of the same name, this new musical holiday classic celebrates resilience, kindness, and the power of community.” This show is being performed through January, 2, 2023.

Lebanon Opera House has A New England Midwinter Revels. Revels is a special celebration of New England, Revels, and Abenaki traditions; as one year ends and another begins, journey through story, song, and dance that celebrates one of the most important things—community.

Come stay at the Lyme Inn and enjoy all that Lyme, the Upper Valley, and the season have to offer.
